What is considered reliable transportation - legally?

Rickey Vrieze: Not sure why your transportation is any of your employer's concern as long as you get to work on time. "Right to work" does not mean you have a right to work, it means you have a right not to be forced to join a union in order to work. (This is a common misconception.)Add'l: Uh . . . "right to work" in no way conflicts with "employment at will." For instance, Virginia is both a "right to work" (no required unions), and an "employment at will" (you can quit or be fired at will), state.See http://www.eeoc.gov and http://www.dol.gov for additional information....Show more

Branden Roddick: divot -"Right to work" does not mean you have a right to work, it means you have a right not to be forced to join a union in order to workI know that, but coming from a "at will" employment state to a "right to work" state, I feel the it sucks for employees because it allows employers to have policies that in a "at will" state would not exist.

Malcom Bourek: I thi! nk throughout all of this you're asking if you can be fired for not having a car. Certainly, your coworkers situation has no bearing on yours, it's not your business if she legally or illegally drives to work, point being she gets there. If it were me, I would give you a chance if you could walk and be on time on a consistent basis. I'm not your employer though, yes they can fire you for not having reliable transportation. What about when it's raining or snowing, are you walking 2 miles then? Sell or scrap the jeep and find a junker that gets to point A & B....Show more

Gerardo Greist: What about when it's raining or snowing, are you walking 2 miles then? This part of Oklahoma is like Seattle, only with bigger drops. People start thinking drought if it doesn't rain for 7 days so I have gotten use to walking in rain.It rarely snows here, and when it does it doesn't stay long. What it does do a lot here is sleet and you can't drive when it does so the walk vs. drive i! s equal there.I am not afraid of the cold weather issue becaus! e I have proper gear to wear in cold weather. I've lived where it got to 80F degrees below zero on freak winter days; 20F doesn't scare me on a 2 mile walk. When I lived in CA I didn't have a car until my job duties required me to, so I am kind of a "cars suck" type person.I am outdoors lover, which is the reason for the jeep. The places I like to visit for fun you are only getting there in a small tough 4x4, which is how it got flooded. Rolled it into a river, body n frame are usable but part that make it go are toast....Show more
